My 5 year old chicken has been malting recently but yesterday I found that it looks like she is taking her feathers out unnaturally. She has been acting the same but I am still very worried about her. When I pick her up she feels very boney. And when I used to pick her up she didn't mind but now she bucks like she is in pain.
I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT ON EARTH TO DO! Please help me!
Thanks for the feedback,

It looks from the picture like she is moulting.
You should not pick up moulting chickens. It is painful for them to be handled when moulting and if you break some of the pin feathers they can in theory bleed to death.
The pin feathers are the short new feather growth.
With the hens here, when they moult they tend to lose weight. They do for reasons I don't fully understand, go off their normal diet and crave things they find foraging.
Some people feed a higher protein diet during moult; that helps if the hens will eat it.
I've had hens here eat about one quarter of the amount of feed they would normally eat when not moulting and make up what they beleive they need from eating shrubs, grasses, roots, berries and grubs.
For some this goes on for a week or so. In a week of 'fasting' a hen can lose a considerable amount of weight. Once whatever period of the moult that causes this behavior is over, they go back to there normal eating patterns.
It is as others have mentioned worth checking for mites etc. Do this at night while they are on their roosts using a torch if necessary taking care not to apply pressure to the pin feathers.
