our broody hen successfully hatched three eggs. Three were still unhatched and the hen yesterday starting to abandon the eggs. My wife noticed a crack in one. She moved the egg into the house and wanted to helpful and removed some of the eggshell. Only after she did, she read about the up to 15 hours it can take from first crack to fully hatched. We put the egg under a heat lamp at 95 d egrets and though our shower maintain around 75% humidity. The picture below shows where we at. The chick shows a fair amount of increase in movement but nothing further. Is this even salvageable. My wife now wants to know whether she should move the position of the egg. I said no, but I am just as much guessing as she is. Anything we can do? Help!

I am having a really hard time telling what is what in your picture. It looks like there is really no shell left. How is the chick doing at this point? Any movement? Can you tell if the yolk sac is absorbed? Can you get some better pictures to share? I have attached a few threads below, just FYI. The first one has some good pictures and info on assisted hatching and the second is a hands-on hatching group thread that you might want to try posting your question on. They may be able to be of more help.

Same thing happened to me. I did assist. I originally thought they both had died. But when removing some shell they were alive. Warmed them up under a heat light second egg started to move and pip. Saved both chicks. I had to assist due to low humidity.

From what I am seeing it looks like a lot of the shell has been removed. In my experience once that much shell has been removed you will have to finish with a full assist to get it to the point it can push out of the shell on its own. But you also want to make sure that the yolk is absorb completely.

thanks all. so it finished the job on its own. for the longest time I was tempted to help it out completely.
After that little one just basically layed there for almost twelve hours. we are seeing some progress - it is standing up and seems to progress but is still very wobbly. We have fed it sugary water and tried some watery mix with chick food. Still not a lot of energy but at least there seems to be some progress.
I think the yolk ended up being absorbed. There was a little bit of blood but not too much. she had that clot on her bum with a string attached to the shell. we left that for a while but it seemed to be drying out so my wife cut it off so the shell was making life even more harder.
fingers crossed
