I have a chick with pasty butt any way we can treat this before it gets to bad?

I had to take a 4 day old baby chick and hold its butt under warm water for a while to get the stuff off, also had to wipe- sorta pick at it and use soap- that mess is so hard to remove! It helps to wrap the chick in a small cloth leaving the head and butt sticking out.- After the wash I gave him a blow dry until he was dry and warm. be careful not to get him too hot or burn him. After that I applied Vasoline. I have heard that you can feed it yogurt- but the routine I did worked. You have to get all the dry poop off- or the new poop sticks on and it starts all over again. MIne did not get it again- just that once.
