I am new here and in desperate need of your expertise. I am a homeschooler who is hatching chicks in a home made incubator. I started with 4 eggs. Based on candling, one appears to have stopped growing about 1 week ago. The other three all were due to hatch on Wednesday (day21). Two hatched over 24 hours ago. The 3rd pipped it's shell yesterday morning around 8 am. Then nothing all day. Last night I gently picked it up and looked at the spot where the pip was and it appeared to have blood in it. This morning, I carefully chipped a bit of shell away from the pip site as per instructions found on this site for helping a chick out of it's shell. There is most definitely blood in there with the chick. The chick was very quiet all night but now it is peeping up a storm. What does the blood mean? Is this a lost cause? What should I do. HELP!

The good thing is the chick is still alive, however if there is blood still when you tried to help then the chick is not ready to hatch.

Keep the area where the pip is moist with a damp paper towel. Leave the egg in the incubator and hopefully it will hatch. Don't try to help it out of the shell since there is still blood. If it still hasn't hatched in several hours then you might want to check it again to make sure that it didn't get stuck in the shell by drying out.

Good luck.

Oh I wish I could be help to you but Im new and have no experance with hatching eggs. I would say from what I have heard that you need to make shure that the membrane dosnt get dried out or sticky but this is all bits and peices from things i Have read .. I just hope someone who knows what there doing can help you.
