I have four 3-month-old chickens and I’m kinda terrified that at least one of them (my Ameraucana) is a cockerel/rooster. Roosters aren’t allowed within city limits, so I’m afraid she might be a he… I’ve had my chickens since the day they hatched, so I’m pretty attached to them. I’m new to this, so I could use all the help I can get.

I’m so sorry, itll be hard getting rid of them! I had this problem but I loved them so much and they weren’t noisy at all. I kept them till they died.,.

The black one is a Jersey Giant, right? And you think it’s also male?? May I ask why?
No. It has a pea comb and red leakage on the shoulders and in the hackle. Jersey giants are pure black with single combs. Also JGs are a lot larger. I think it is an olive egger.

I think it is male because it has the type of feathering only male chickens get. Sickle feathers on the tail, long, thin, pointed saddle feathers. And the red on the shoulders is another sign of it being a male, plus the large red comb.

Thank you for the info. I really appreciate it, even though it makes me sad. 😕

So I'm also in an area where you're not supposed to have roosters but I called my township and they said they didn't care as long as our neighbors don't complain. Roosters have a variety of personalities/dispositions and they come with their own set of rules. If you plan to house them with your hens, remember at least 10 hens per rooster, otherwise you might have to create a bachelor pad. Talk to your neighbors. Offer them eggs. I would try keeping them till somebody tells you they have to go.
