Does anyone have an idea what’s going on with my girl? The last 2 days she’s been very lethargic, tonight shes holding her wing out, her comb is pale. She will eat and drink, but tonight is laying down to eat. My hens are about 18-20 weeks old. Some of them started laying eggs yesterday.

I’ve checked her egg bound, internal exam revealed no egg. No parasites/worms in her stool. I gave her an epson salt soak last night just in case.

No signs/symptoms of sour/impacted crop.

I’m at a lose any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hello sorry to hear about your chicken. How is she today?

The picture makes it look like she is having issues with her neck/head and ability to stand. Is she able to stand? How about holding her neck up? Is she having balance issues?

Give her a good once over for lice/mites; you’ll find them more under the wings, near the vent and in other warmer areas.

Was her crop empty this morning?

Her head and neck are fine that picture is weird. Yes her crop was empty this morning. I think I have zeros in on a possible cause. After examing her this morning she appears to have injured a leg. She will not put pressure on it at all. She won’t stand on her left foot. She’s just lays it done and won’t fully stand on it.

I felt around on the leg and I didn’t feel and breaks/dislocations.

And she is still eating and drinking.

How about the bottom of her foot? Does she have any bumbles? Using her wing as balance would make sense for a leg injury. Have you felt around her hip, does it feel funny?

With lameness and a drooping wing, Mareks disease is something we would worry about, but in the meantime, make sure that she is drinking some fluids, especially some electrolytes for a couple of days. Offer some mushy water chicken feed and a little cooked egg with it. Poultry NutriDrench 2 ml orally with plain water would also be good. Make sure that she is close to food and water and I would place her in a wire dog crate or basket since she may be picked in by the others.

She is in a dog crate in our house with food, scratch grains, crushed eggshells, grit, and meal worms. I’ve been giving her electrolyte water since last night. Her comb and waddle brightened back up today. I was giving her moistened feed last night.

Just a few minutes ago I examed her, I don’t feel anything abnormal in her joints. She keeps lifting her left leg under herself.

When I was examining her she kept balling her talons up. I supported her weight and I could get her to put and weight on either foot.
