My hen just laid her first egg and is making this really weird sound
Please help me! She is not even a year old, we have 5 other pullets, and she just layer her first egg!

lol, it sounds like she is laughing.

Chickens like to “sing” after they lay their eggs. Some say it is to call the rooster of the flock to come protect her as she rejoins the group. Your girl probably just has an interesting voice and song choice. Give her a few minutes to see if she settles down, then watch her the next time she lays and see if she sings the same song every time.

lol - I don't know if this is alarming but I will say, those girls are -- 100% understandably -- so surprised when an egg shows up. As well they should be; it is truly bizarre, lol. Hope she gets with the program. Poor things, imagine PMSing 7 days/week....

She is still doing it, it’s been hours. I’m getting worried

Is it normal for them to do it for hours

It's not the egg song/escort call. One of my hens makes noises when laying sometimes (not exactly like that). It could just be because of stress or pain. I'd say give her a day and see what happens.

An hour or two, yes.

She's doing it when she breathes in though and that's concerning. If she had a respiratory infection though, she'd have other symptoms like bubbles in her eyes, sneezing, mucous in her nostrils...not eating or drinking, huddling up lethargic. She looks fine to me, but anxious.

Is her comb the normal color?

If she's up and walking around and not lethargic thats a good sign. Make sure shes eating and drinking normal and just monitor her to see if she improves or starts acting off. Laying your first egg has to be painful and exhausting. She might just need some time.
