hello all, i have a big problem one of my hens is suffering from mites, ive dusted her and the flock but i believe they have gotten the best of her this morning she couldnt hardly walk or stand. i hate seeing any animal suffer and i dont know if i can cull her or not. is there an easy humane way to put her out of here misery?? its gonna be hard either way but like i said i dont want her to suffer any longer. please help!! thanks

I'm not sure her condition has anything to do with a mite infestation, though. What are you dusting with and how often? Is there just one bird who is ill, even though you dusted them all? I dont think we have enough information, really, to know what is wrong, but a really sick bird shouldn't have to continue suffering.

well shes the only one who has been picking out her feathers and acting lethargic she still eats and drinks. i dusted with poultry dust. this morning i noticed while she was trying to walk out of the chicken house it seemed her legs just collapsed under her and then she layed there for a bit then she went on out. i just think shes getting worse

I think it's a bit early based on what you are telling us. Can you look at the sticky at the top of the board that addresses "necessary info" for diagnosis? Lots of info needed to determine what may be affecting this bird, and depending on what it is, you MAY want to cull her, but you may be able to nurse her a little bit and she'll be fine!

1) What type of bird , age and weight. a leghorn hen 3 years old approximately 1 to 1.5 lbs

2) What is the behavior, exactly. lethargic, picking feathers out, messy rear, just acting out of it. not laying any eggs

3) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma. no

4) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation. about 5 months ago she had cocci, i nursed her back to health and she had been since until maybe about a few weeks ago i noticed here having diarrhia, and picking at her butt alot and pulling her feathers out and it looked like mites at the base of her feathers

5) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all. shes been eating and drinking fine. laying mash, scratch feed, cracked corn, yougurt, lettuce, drinking water with vinegar in it

6) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc.
her poop is runny watery like not normal

7) What has been the treatment you have administered so far?
i dusted her the run and the house, feeding her yogurt

8 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet? i would like to try to treat her myself i cannot afford a vet right now
9) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help.
10) Describe the housing/bedding in use i use pine chips as bedding in a 6 x 6 house
