Help!!!

i wish I was still living in New Jersey. I would show up and help. But I live in texas now. :( If this was a month ago... *darn it* Try advertisting on craigslist to find people... and of course Meetup! I connected with a texas chicken group on meetup. There ARE people who will help you. You jsut have to find them.

Thank you for the idea. I think it is certainly a good one! I am going to fight to have backyard chickens in my city. I have a friend with a horse about a 40 minute drive from me. If I absolutely have to temporarily relocate them during my fight, this is where my girls will go. My heart is very much involved as I spend a great deal of time with my girls every day and would be limited from that if they need to leave my house for a while. I will keep your idea in mind and pass it along to some friends I know could use something like that for gardening! Thank you!
I have a farm in Ga that has power lines that cut through it. They are the main line, those large metal towers with all of the lines, usually you can see them from the road because they have to clear cut 50 ft. in either directions. Anyway you cannot build any "permanent" structures like a house or anything in this area. You can however garden and keep livestock...even build a chicken house. Some people will rent this property out to gardeners and people who want to keep small flocks of animals. The property is usually under $100 a month because of its limited use and low effective tax rate. I would say put a post on craigslist that you are looking to rent some power line property to keep a flock of chickens. I think you can also rent line property from the gov't in some spots that they personally own I saw something about it on a urban farming documentary. I hope you can find some in Va. we have a fair amount here in Ga. and I see posts for it for rent on CL occasionally. Hope this helps you out.

Okay...I applied for my appeal at the zoning board office today. The lady there was very helpful and on my side. So is the zoning inspector. Gotta love it. They were helping me word my forms correctly and telling me what may have a bigger impact on the decision of the board. Pictures, letters from my neighbors...blah blah YES....Thank you for the help! April 4th is the hearing date. They are going to put a big sign in my front yard and put an add in the paper. They say that was what my $200 fee was for the appeal. Wish me and all of Virginia Beach luck!

We are in Virginia Beach and are not zoned for chickens but want them and plan to get a few baby chicks this spring. We are definitely interested and willing to show our support for changing the ordinances in VB! Let us know how we can help!

I spoke at the city council meet this past Tuesday. Let your councilman know you want backyard chickens legal in Va.Beach. I have a petition online facebook or change.org under sustainability. The way to go is to gat as many involved as possible. Call and/or email your councilperson. I will post the names, numbers, and whatever email adds I have for them. I have a group posting on craigslist under Norfolk. Please show up at the city council meets the second Tuesday of each month till we get this changed. If you wish to speak at the meeting, you must arrive before 6 and register.

I too live in VA Beach,in the Green Run area. I pray for your success and I've thinking you might want to contact organisations who help those wanting to change laws and ordinances regarding chickens There is Chickens in the yard, they are a group in the northwest that has success changing laws in their area and they support the right to own chickens nationwide.. Ibecame aware of them whil cruising through you tube. there's another group in Va but I need to find their website
God bless your indeavor

Thanks for the information. I've signed the petition you have on change.org and have posted it on FB as well as invited others to sign it. It would be exciting to reach a 1000 signatures! Can you tell me what a typical conversation is like when you call. I'm a little nervous about calling but I believe a phone call might be more meaningful than an email. My husband and I will mark our calendar for the 2nd Tuesday in March. Thanks for all you're doing!

237 people have signed the petition to legalize backyard chickens in Virginia Beach! I was #178 when I signed in a few days ago. I'm thrilled to see the numbers steadily climbing. Please consider supporting our efforts by signing the petition here

Thank You!!

I just asked to speak to my council rep. They get on the phone and you tell them why you are calling. Give them the factual reasons why keeping chickens is a good idea. Companionship, fertilizer, eggs, entertainment, compost, eat bugs, eat weeds, eat kitchen waste. All without relying on petroleum products AND chemicals! The pilot was at my house today with a photographer. The story is supposed to be in the paper on Thursday. The journalist is Aron Applegate. Call and email city council all the time. Let them know we are not going away! Thank you for your support. Coming to the council meetings and signing up to speak there is a good idea too. Even if you don't want to speak, standing up in support of whoever is speaking(me!) will carry much more weight than if I am there alone. Thank you!
