Was it a Rat snake? Was it a light color under the head? ( chin) if so its not poison. I would be sure to remove it from the coop it will eat small chickens, chicks and eggs. Probably scared her pretty bad.

it was all black at the top and a whitish cream color all down the bottom (belly) head and tail as well.

we just removed it the day we found it in the coop (today) thanks

the snake ate 7 eggs in 1 night!!!! we went to check the hens this morning and all seven eggs were gone. we had only 10 more days until they hatched.

Rat snakes are not poisonous. Make sure you take it very far away into the woods where it can't get back in your coop, if you didn't kill it. I am very sorry about your eggs. :( the hen was trying to protect the eggs.

we brought it far away from the house. thanks for the advice!!!! we called him "jr". there is still a "big daddy" living in our hay bales. hopefully we will find him.
