HELP!!!

Ok thanks. It's weird because he just hatched last night so I'm now sure how he would have injured it unless it happens during hatch. I'm more worried its a malform. Is that possible?

This is the person who's studies leg issues quite a bit. Thanks, Sumi, for contacting me!

I would suspect this is a Slipped Achilles Tendon in the Hock Joint. You can read about it on the Poultry Podiatry page on the website linked in my sig below. It should be treated as soon as possible.

Any changes in temperature and hatching conditions can affect the growth and development in chicks. Also if they eggs weren't rotated it can cause problems. Make sure that you don't handle the eggs too much and DO NOT use markers of any kind on eggs as they are extremely porous and can contaminate the egg an the developing chick. Even heavy pencil marks can affect them. There was most likely a mutation or simply a underdeveloped chick the same way children can be born having similar issues. I am surprised that BOTH chickens had these problems which lead me to believe that there was in fact a problem during the developing stage.

Inadequate nutrition in the parents' diet can cause Perosis, which makes offspring more vulnerable to getting a slipped tendon.

This hatch has me so overwhelmed and discouraged. My first hatch went great. For my first time. And I has no health problems whatsoever. This batch I got from another source. I have no idea of the living conditions or health of the hens I just know this is a night and say experience and makes me feel like I NEVER want to hatch again. I will look up how to handle the perosis. Thanks for all the help :/

I'm sorry to hear you had such a bad experience and I hope the chicks will be o.k. you'll be able to sort out the leg issue.

Thanks. I pulled her put to try and splint but I can't even get the leg straight. I pull it out a little and she peeps and pulls away and draws it up back towards herself. How straight shiny I try and splint it?

You should get someone to hold the little one for you while you work on her leg. They are NOT keen on getting their legs/feet messed with. I had to tape a chick's splayed legs a few months ago and it took me and my husband to get the job done.

Ok thanks. I will work on her when hubby gets home. I will try and leave her be for now. Which isn't easy and I just feel awful. Thank you again for all the help.
