Help

I am incubating some chicks 2 of them hatched out this morning I left them in the incubator until they were dry and from there I put them in the brooder. They were in the brooder for maybe a half hour. I went back to check on them and they were dead. Am I doing something wrong here? This is my first time doing this. I have another one pipping now so I don't want to do something wrong.

Hello and Welcome To BYC! Sorry about your chicks. What is your brooder set up like, what is the temperature in it? You want a warm spot around 95* for them but there should be cooler spots and it should not be covered/closed since it can overheat really fast. What sort of light / heat source are you using, be careful you are not using a teflon coated shatter proof light bulb. You are sure nothing could get in the brooder and harm them? I'm using a box brooder I made. It's ventilated and the temp was 95. I was wondering if maybe it's because I was using wood chips. They were 2 days over the hatch day but we did have some difficulties with keeping the temp up in the incubator at first so I was thinking that may also have played a part.

So sorry about losing your two chicks.

It is going to be from something in their environment. So make sure you have the correct temp with a good thermometer that is very accurate. No drafts in the brooder, but large enough there are cool spots on one side, heat off to the other. Do not cover the lid of the brooder with anything but a screen or wire for good oxygen and heat exchange. Use a red or infra red bulb for heat and light. Wood chips won't hurt anything as long as they are not cedar. Cedar will kill poultry.

My brooder set up and I can keep it with in a couple of degrees ...






Now I have been using this for only 20 years and it works for me
but I do not know much ether ....




Lets see your set up ?????

I normally leave my new hatches in the incubator to 6 to 10 hours
after after hatch and dip the beaks several times an hour .....
