It's a fine balance between not doing any additional damage
Yeppers, I call it my mobility budget.
My spine, knees, and ankles are damaged too.

but the vibration gets to me after a while.
Definitely exacerbates damaged joints, especially the gripping ones.

The other day a young coworker tried to jump to my aid when I grunted while bending to reach deep into a low cupboard to retrieve something.

I explained that I have to keep on doing everything I *can* do as long as I can still do it to make sure that I can still do it for as long as possible.

I had a scare a few weeks ago when I got onto the floor and couldn't get back up without help -- but that was due to still being weak from that long illness and I can get down and back up again now. :D

I have a Cub Cadet weed whacker.
it runs on straight gas, no oil mix needed. I do not like it,. It has enough power to cut down the heaviest brush, but it breaks the string so often. I try to run it at half throttle.
I am thinking of getting a cordless grass cutter. I can't get my rider mower close to the grapes because of the wires. I don't want to go at it with a weed whacker because one little slip and the grape gets cut off.
I was going to buy a hand hedge shear, but for about the same price I can get a cordless hand held grass clipper. with a long handle so I won't have to call for help to stand back up.
yesterday, Annie picked up a piece of wire in the lawn mower tire. today Jim is going to fix it.
This place had old rusty fences all over it before we bought it.
It looked like a piece of pig wire.

Something like this?

I had one of these long ago, it was slick, also had a long handle attachement.

Husband takes care of the weed wacking, he also got a hedge trimmer that is very nifty that runs on batteries.

My DH does landscape and maintenance for a historic site and can spend 30 hours out of 40 on a mower in peak season so I do the mowing at home. I am doing more of the weed whacking with the chickens moved to the back yard since keeping the fenceline clear is my job.

Now that they are right next to the weedy hill, I might as well just keep on going. :D

yes,Aart, just like that, with a hedge attachment and a long handle.
I went to Menards . the guy in the tool section had not a clue what I was looking for. Finally I decided to come home and order it on the computer.
I picked up a plug tire patch kit. they no longer include the cement with it. so I bought a flat patch kit which has the cement. it was less expensive than buying a can of cement.
I bought a pruner , too. the one I have has no spring in the handle anymore, and the blades have a slight gap so it doesn't cut clean.
that pottery looks like fun. I wonder if there is someplace around here to do it.
the husband in this household does the weed whacking, too.

All the talk here about 'cutters' spurred me to get out the hedge trimmer and the string trimmer to cut down some of the knee high grasses around the pondsai....lillys are blooming, dragonflies are hatching, frogs are jumping in there....and now I can see that better.
The hedge trimmers worked good for cutting down stuff close to the pondsai and not having it end up in the water, the string trimmer got the stuff farther out and the battery lasted enough to line out two flower beds.
Was a tiny bit of all that 'should' be done, but still felt good to do it.

Idk what towns or cities are near you Jim, but check around. You may get lucky and find a place that gives classes.

what kind of conversation can we start next to get Aart motivated to do something else ? lolol maybe we can discuss painting our houses ??
Cappy, Wausau is a pretty large town which connects directly to Schofield, which connects directly to Rothschild and Weston. I'm sure if I searched I could find a pottery.
the kids used to do pottery in grade school. we have a few mishapened dishes around here yet..
