Hello everyone!
Apologies if I’m not posting correctly- I’m a long-time lurker, but never found a reason to post/register until today!
We’ve had chickens for about 5 years now, and this is our first year hatching. Twelve eggs incubated and ten made it to viability. We had a silkie egg pip on day 18, and unfortunately, I didn’t notice until I went to remove the turner for lockdown. The chick pipped in the dead center of the egg- halfway between either end and a ways away from the air cell. I’m not sure if the turner or the chick broke away more of the shell, but it was a decent sized hole (larger than a small pip). I watched and the membrane began to get hard and tight, retracting from the shell and onto the chick- I believe shrink wrapped? The chick has been trying to turn without success and chirps very, very loudly when doing so. I finally got him/her out and found the membrane was nearly glued to the side of its face. I was able to detach it with some warm water and patience.
I’ve been moisturizing the membrane with water and a little food grade oil, and slowly pulling the membrane back (there are no visible veins in the area). It’s been over 24 hours now, and we’re going into day 20, but I’m not sure if I should further assist or leave it be. I’m afraid the yolk sack isn’t fully absorbed or there are veins I’m not seeing that haven’t retracted since it’s days early.
It’s a very loud, active chick, and I’m worrying that it’s struggling. I know loud chicks are not a good sign out of the egg, but this is my first hatch!
Also-
Humidity was 45-50% during incubation, temperature was steady at 99.5-100°. We’ve been at 70-75% humidity since lock down. The silkie eggs were shipped. Two more eggs- not silkies, and collected from my hens- have pipped as of this morning, in the correct place and look healthy- I haven’t taken them out of the incubator and would prefer to leave them to do their thing.
I’ve read the assisted hatching guide recommended here in other posts a few times, but if anyone has additional advice or thoughts/experiences they could share, I’d be very grateful!
