Hello everyone!
Apologies if I’m not posting correctly- I’m a long-time lurker, but never found a reason to post/register until today!
We’ve had chickens for about 5 years now, and this is our first year hatching. Twelve eggs incubated and ten made it to viability. We had a silkie egg pip on day 18, and unfortunately, I didn’t notice until I went to remove the turner for lockdown. The chick pipped in the dead center of the egg- halfway between either end and a ways away from the air cell. I’m not sure if the turner or the chick broke away more of the shell, but it was a decent sized hole (larger than a small pip). I watched and the membrane began to get hard and tight, retracting from the shell and onto the chick- I believe shrink wrapped? The chick has been trying to turn without success and chirps very, very loudly when doing so. I finally got him/her out and found the membrane was nearly glued to the side of its face. I was able to detach it with some warm water and patience.
I’ve been moisturizing the membrane with water and a little food grade oil, and slowly pulling the membrane back (there are no visible veins in the area). It’s been over 24 hours now, and we’re going into day 20, but I’m not sure if I should further assist or leave it be. I’m afraid the yolk sack isn’t fully absorbed or there are veins I’m not seeing that haven’t retracted since it’s days early.
It’s a very loud, active chick, and I’m worrying that it’s struggling. I know loud chicks are not a good sign out of the egg, but this is my first hatch!
Also-
Humidity was 45-50% during incubation, temperature was steady at 99.5-100°. We’ve been at 70-75% humidity since lock down. The silkie eggs were shipped. Two more eggs- not silkies, and collected from my hens- have pipped as of this morning, in the correct place and look healthy- I haven’t taken them out of the incubator and would prefer to leave them to do their thing.
I’ve read the assisted hatching guide recommended here in other posts a few times, but if anyone has additional advice or thoughts/experiences they could share, I’d be very grateful!

Hi,

Is this chick totally out of the egg now, with its yolk sac still unabsorbed?

If so, just keep that moist and keep it in the incubator. It should be okay in 12 hours or so. If it's still in the egg, just leave it that way, and it'll come out when it's ready. At least it can breath and move now. It might be making chewing motions with its beak. That's it, absorbing the yolk.

I was going to paste that article you referred to, but you already have it. You're doing fine.

No, I’ve kept the chick in the shell as much as possible. At the moment, I’m just chipping away little bits of dried membrane and shell every few hours when he/she seems stuck and keeping it as moist as I can without opening the incubator every couple of hours.

A picture would help, but it sounds like it'll be okay. It can breath and move, and will sleep/rest a lot. Try let it do the rest on its own unless you're sure it can't.

Thank you! It seems to be resting, but will occasionally chirp pretty loudly. I’ll see about getting a picture!

Here are the pictures. It seems like it still can’t turn, but is kicking and breaking quite a bit of the shell off and cracked the other side. There’s a noticeable difference in the size of the hole now compared to a few hours ago! He/she’s breathing well and seems more comfortable.

I have eggs shipped in here a lot, and many do that middle of the egg pipping. It's sometime called "saddled" when they are still in the egg as they look similar to a saddle.

What you have there, I've had a dozen times, and they always hatch fine after the little help in the beginning. Just keep an eye on it. It's good it's working on the shell itself. The less we do, the better it is for them.
