Yeah, it can be pricey. I got a pretty small bag for $8.. and it was pushed to the back of the fridge and I forgot about it! Now I just want to use it up. Otherwise I wouldn't think of spending the $! haha They seem to like it and after 2 different times (small amounts) they are all alive!

I do throw in some flax seed when I bring them compost. I always have extra and they like it!

I bought hemp seed from the health food store, but don't care for the taste. Glad to know my chickens might enjoy it.

I feed my 3 hens hemp seed very regularly. They are free range in the back yard and have plenty of grass and bugs to eat as well, but they absolutely love the hemp seed. They come running for it and just gobble it down. The best part is that they still lay just as often as when I fed them a traditional "layer mix" feed. I also crush up all the eggs shells from their eggs after we eat them and add it to the hemp seed feed dish because they still seem to like to get the extra calcium.

It's pretty tough to find a reasonable price tag, but I use these guys: http://www.shop.krusefeed.com/product.sc?productId=1480&categoryId=-1 It's $73.00 for 50 lbs.

So far, my experience with using the hemp seed as a complete replacement for the "layer feed" mix I used to use is that the yolks look healthier (darker), the hemp seeds seem to last significantly longer, which means I don't have to resupply nearly as often as I did with the "layer feed", and they genuinely seem to enjoy it more than the traditional "layer feed". The last few times I tried feeding them the "layer feed" they sort of just picked around it and ate the rest of the hemp seeds first, before they were forced to eat the "layer feed". Personally, I'm super happy with it. Wish they weren't sterilized and would simply sprout into hemp plants and rain an infinite supply of hemp seed food for my lady birds!!!

Has anyone here ever used hemp seed as a component in a custom feed blend or as a snack? Any thoughts on if it is a good chicken food or not?
Did you ever try this? I have chicken pets and I'm an avid Cannabis smoker and researcher, and I've observed that the chickens will eat just about anything EXCEPT Cannabis seeds. Have you observed otherwise? Are your seeds cracked open? @dragonfishcaribbean
