Hen acting like choking please HELP!

feel her crop. Is it gooshy? It should be relatively firm and kinda hard like. If it is gooshy, type her forward and upside down causing her to throw up and get that yuck outta there. Then look up sour crop and go from there.

I use pine bedding, the other hens seem to be fine except they have been sneezing often, but Lilly the sick one doesn't. I'm not sure on the respiratory infection, she just seems to be choking, not wheezing or any of the other symptoms. It's slightly gooshy, I have looked up sour crop and I'm not sure, I took their food last night and felt her crop this morning, and it was slightly full, but was pretty much empty.

She seems to be doing much better, I hardly see her choke now. She is eating just as much as the others now. I have been giving her 1 fish oil capsul a day, and she seems great!

i have baby chick that is doing the EXACT same thing....I understand that this is an old posting...but can someone help? thank you...

Sometimes they get food or grass or something stuck in their throat and it takes times to work it down. olive oil and throat massages help. Chicks can choke on the starter crumbles if they gorge themselves. Make sure they have food and water available 24/7. Good luck.

thank u so much! I promise u my chickies are well provided for with food n water.....I will try to give her some oil....i have raised quite a few chickens n never seen this before!

I will keep you posted....

idk...that didn't work...within the hr she died.....strangest thing...never seen happen b4...thanks for the reply....

I had a hen die once from a crop issue -- What seems like something insignificant to us may be a big deal with birds. I used to let them at grass clippings, but imo the clippings they ingest are at times too long -- When they bite some turf/grass, they naturally take the size appropriate for them, so I never give them clippings anymore.

not inferring this is the issue, just a thought.

Hi I have just adopted 4 ex battery hens 3 weeks ago & now one of the girls is exhibiting the exact same symptoms of 'sort of choking' that you described ages ago. She is eating & drinking & sometimes seems fine but then she will make a 'C' 'C' sort of sound & breathe a bit raspy. Did you ever find out what it was or how to treat it? If I were to catch her & take her to the vet she would be extremley stressed as she is just getting to know me (& I am a brand new chook owner). Her crop seems totally normal, the other girls are fine. They are in a big shed with straw beds (waiting while their big new run gets built).
Any help/advice would be most gratefully received.
