Hen alive - not moving - but neck appears broken?? **UPDATE @ #14**

Last night she was fine. She didn't come out of the coop this morning and found her lying under the roost. This is a chicken tractor, roost only about 6 inches off ground.

She is on her side, leg's sometimes moving but mostly curled up, her head appears turned around from normal. What in the world?






Is this injury or disease? Any suggestions on what to do for her other than put her down?

She's not paralyzed - she is trying to flap her wings to right herself but her head looks on backwards. Could this be an injury?

Granddaughter asleep and need to decide what to do before she gets up. She's just 5 and just met the chickens yesterday. Yikes!

We've determined that all her parts are working. Except her neck and head. Tried to see if we could move it around but afraid we really will break it if it's not already. I've only had chickens a month so I'm really out of my league here.

Any advice appreciated.

Honestly, I think it would be most humane to put her down. That poor little thing. I think that would be best for her. Good Luck.

That's my thinking, too. She doesn't seem to be in any pain but I want to make sure this isn't some disease that's going to get the rest of my girls. I've check on wry neck but it says that there are prior symptoms and usually they can get up and move, their neck is just floppy.

Has anyone seen anything like this occur overnight with no prior symptoms?

We put her down.

Hated to do it but didn't see any recourse. She couldn't stand and when we would hold her upright, her head was totally upside down.

My son did the deed. Said it was the worst thing he ever did. I feel really bad but didn't know what else to do.

I would still love to know if anyone else has seen anything like this before.

Yes, I have several chickens killed by ND. The symptoms are just like this.

Thanks for your response. I looked up pics of chickens with ND and it does look the same. Being new to chickens, I've not heard of it before. All 4 of my girls came from the same place and they were put into a brand new coop that we just built.

Is their any preventative for this disease or any cure? Or do I just wait for the rest of them to get it, too?

Yes, yes, no.
Like for most chicken diseases, vaccination is always the best preventative for ND. And AFAIK, you can even use the vaccine for ND on sick birds. It can be helpful to some extend.
