Two weeks ago, a raccoon dug underneath our hen house and killed several of our hens. One of the hens had an injured, droopy wing, but seemed to be getting along fine- eating, drinking, moving around. But, one the 3rd day after her injury (the day the rooster died of shock), she wouldn’t go in to roost, and hid behind some tools on the back porch. So, I put her in a pen in the garage, cleaned her, (there was no open wound- mostly dirt and dirty feathers), sprayed her well with Microcyn AH (anti microbial poultry care). I allowed her to free range, but she never went back to mingling with the other hens (I only have 6 left out of 14). After a week, I put her in a cage inside the run to try and integrate her back into the flock. She started to do better- not acting petrified of the other hens, she seemed much more calm. Last night, I put her on a lower perch to sleep. This afternoon, I went to check on her, and she had obviously been pecked in her injured area by the other hens. There was no sign of infection (that I could tell) until today. Tonight, I picked her up because I wanted to clean her wound that now had bloody spots, and I noticed she stank. I am at a loss as to what to do for this hen. I read about oregano in the water as an antibiotic, should I give her that? I don’t know of any vets around here who would care for a chicken. Should I wrap her wing? She has such a will to live, and I don’t want to let her down.
Photos attached: First photo is the day I noticed her injury. 2nd photo is her all cleaned up in the garage, 3rd picture is from today after she has been pecked. The last 2 are after I cleaned her this evening and applied more anti microbial spray. It looks horrible and stinks.
