While doing chores tonight I saw a hen already up on the roost. When I went to scratch her, she turned and I saw her butt was oozing thick blood/poo. I picked her up which was quite the fight, she seems to be acting her normal self now in the cage. I am unsure what is going on. Any ideas?

Her vent has been severely pecked by the other chickens. She could have a prolapsed vent, which can happen to hens from straining or having an egg stuck, and that could have attracted pecking because of the red color. Blood attracts more pecking.

Remove her to a dog crate or basket inside in a cool spot. Spray her wounds with warm water or saline, Vetericyn, etc. Then apply Neosporin to her vent and keep it moist at all times. Manuka honey is also good. Offer her some fluids and mushy feed or egg when she is settled.

I separated her right away, and will use some vetericyn I have. Thank you!

When my husband got home he was able to help me safely get her egg out. She is doing well and we will keep her separated and nurse her back to health over the next few days. Thank you!
That’s good to hear. Let us know how she does. How is her vent looking?

Glad that you got the egg out. She still may benefit from a dose of calcium citrate with D, or at least Tums given orally to help with muscle contractions, and prevent her from getting egg bound again.

I would soak her bottom only daily in warm Epsom salts or water with some salt, 2 tsp per quart to make saline, or a little Betadine or Hibiclens. Apply Neosporin after she is thoroughly dried in a towel or hairdryer. This will speed healing.
