I woke up this morning to get the chickens ready and my PR is on the floor. I think she fell off the roosts and it might have stunned her and she hurt her leg. There’s no bedding because they have mites and I’m trying to get rid of those. I’ve been spraying and using powder stuff as well. Her toes are turned like that out of genetics or an injury I’m not sure but she has lived with it. I put her in a dog crate with food and water in the run so she’s not moving around too much. I’m not sure what to do. Do you have any ideas on how I can help her? I’m already stressed with the mites😭 I was not prepared for this!

Can you get a clear picture of her standing on her feet...focus on the legs and feet?

Is she drinking and eating? Mites can suck the life out of a chicken pretty quickly. Encourage her to eat and drink. Do you have some tuna fish on hand?

She’s a big girl. I’ve seen her eat and drink but not today yet. I’ll go out and look. I won’t be home all day though. I have class in a couple hours and then work. I really hope she is going to be okay.

I just checked on her and she tried trying towards her food but again her balance isn’t good. She is laying down now. Hopefully she tries eating and drinking later. But when I get home I’ll make sure she tries eating and drinking some more. I can try giving her a few mealworms treats I know she’ll eat those.

Ok...if you can see if she will eat some tuna, fish or an egg before you leave for your class. She looks like she is in bad shape so if you have a couple of hours now,. I would try to get her to eat something.

I ran out of eggs and I don’t have tuna but I gave her some mealworms and she ate them right up. She was facing her food when I went it there and it looked like she ate some. She is trying to move but I think she is trying to keep weight off one leg. I cant seem to figure out which one. I’m going to keep her in the cage and keep an eye on her and I’m probably going to have to let her leg heal on her own. Idk is there anything I can give her to help the healing?

Do you have a rooster who might have tried to mate and hurt her? How high is the roost bar? What treatments are you using for the mites? I recommend using permethrin dust in a sock, and dusting each chicken. Use it at least twice 7 day intervals, then examine and parting the feathers every 7 days. But for the coop, permethrin 10 (under the name Gordon’s or Martins) is available under $10 for a pint and larger at Tractor Supply and online. It is concentrated and has to be diluted in water—1 tsp (5 ml per liter or quart) or 4 tsp per gallon. Do not use full strength. Use in a spray bottle or garden sprayer for coop, floor, walls, and roosts. Let it dry for an hour before admitting chickens back. It lasts 30 days.

Thank you!! I do have a rooster but he didn’t try and mate her. If anything I think what happened was my one hen was eating and went back to find her spot which was taken and they always try to get back into the spot they always sleep in and PR might have gotten pushed and couldn’t catch herself. She’s also a heavy girl and could have leaned foward a little while sleeping and fell. The roost isn’t that high but I had no bedding down and she probally didn’t catch herself and got hurt. How should I use the sock to dust them? I have been using permethrin 10 spray. What we are planning for this weekend is to blow torch everything. Spray it again and dust the chickens. We are going to clean out the run also blow torch the run and hose everything down. We are gonna do this every weekend until we have to start putting winter stuff up.
