My leghorn has a huge comb and we found her this afternoon with it ripped in half 😭

We tried applying pressure to the area and thought that helped stop the bleeding. We also dabbed with flour to help. We applied vetericyn a little while later and then blu kote before bed.

We just checked and it looks like she is STILL bleeding. It's been almost 7 hours now.

I even tried taping popsicle sticks together to apply constant pressure, but it didn't work that well. My husband wants to cull so she doesn't slowly bleed out overnight.

Please help!! Everything is currently closed where we are, so we don't have a ton of options.

Wrap up with gauze, and then tape over that with duct tape. In the morning,, remove to see how it healed.
Don't cull just yet :hugs

WISHING YOU BEST,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,:welcome

So we ended up tying chopsticks together overnight to apply constant pressure.

The comb was a little purple when we got up, but is not bleeding. We took the sticks off and spritzed some vetericyn on the wound again.

She is currently going full hog on the food we put down. She hasn't paid attention to the water yet, but I assume she'll drink when done eating.

What is the best way to clean all the blood off of her? She's coated 😵‍💫 Wasn't sure if a bath would be a good idea because she's already pretty stressed.

I'll get a picture in a bit though. Don't want to disturb her eating. It's the first time she's eaten on her own since we got her ☺️

I definitely wouldn’t bathe her, it would be pretty stressful for her. Perhaps wet a soft, clean cloth and use that to gently wipe the blood off?

have you tried cornstarch instead of flour?

Her experience is she has someone who is trying to help her through a stressful situation.
Maybe you can try using some warm water with Dawn dish soap and use your fingers to clean up her comb or a paper towel. If the blood is on feathers, you may need to use a dish cloth. I would not recommend bathing her - it's stressful for most chickens.

At least she is eating and drinking so that is a good sign.

In the future baking soda works as a coagulant. We always have styptic powder on hand which is our go to.

okay i’m pro in that cause i Dubbed my rooster comb and helped so many people with excessive bleeding comb issues

first of all grab your hen and let it be calm take a towel soak it in ice water and put this towel on the bleeding area apply pressure
3 sec pressure stop again 3 sec pressure stop turn on AC as cold as possible

bleeding mostly happen when blood pressure is rising with body heat once if stablise it get clotted that’s what CT - BT rule applied on human as well

if still blood comes take Corn Starch or Flour apply a thick layer it will stop it leave it and keep applying until blood clotted
