Hen covering herself with shavings

They are trying to camouflage themselves because they are most vulnerable when laying.

YUP I just got done reading about this. It sure does make the most sense. Only a couple of mine do this. Maybe those are the ones that will be the best broodies!

It's normal for them to try to hide themselves when they are laying. It's also normal for more than one bird to use the same box at the same time. I have six boxes for thirty birds. They only use two and I commonly see three bo's in a milk crate at one time even when there are five other boxes open.
 
My hen was doing that today. She has gone broody, so I keep her off the nest trying to break her cycle, much to her annoyance. I put her on the grass and she walked around tossing dried leaves over her back. Very curious!
