hen crowing like a rooster

Sometimes in a flock without a rooster the dominant hen will crow. Do you have a picture of her so we can be sure she is indeed a she?

If it's a young bird crowing, it's likely a cockerel. If it's a dominant hen a few years old, it's possible for her to crow.

Agreed; hens rarely crow and when one does it's almost always an older hen that has assumed the role of a rooster in a roosterless flock. The odds are very high that your crowing BO is a cockerel. If you want to post a pic of him we can confirm it for you.

I have a flock of 7 hens including a 5-year-old banty who crows. I know she's a hen because she used to lay eggs when she was younger. And before she started, I had another hen who crowed (a feisty little scissor-beaked Sebright), who was still laying at the time but has since passed away. She sounded really funny. I wish I still had the recording I made. So, it isn't too rare around here. :)

Note that both of them are older hens, and it sounds like they are in a roosterless flock which is consistent with my statement.

Yes, you're right. Both were older. The Sebright was about 3 or 4 when she started in. So having an older hen assume the role of rooster is not too unusual? I was really starting to wonder since now I've had it happen twice. It's interesting, too, that both were the smallest bird in the flock at the time but really acted "roosterish" and looked quite robust.

I'm interested in knowing more about the buff orp--how old and what she looks like.

Thanks im new to this ckicken raising if i would have know this i wluld have hsd a lot more hens than dogs
