We have a 10 week old supposedly female Buff Orpington that crows about one morning out of three about 6 times in a row and then not again all day. A friend checked 'her' out and said she was a hen (based on her comb points and the length of her wing feathers) but that dominant hens sometimes crow. She is definitely the dominant hen out of 3.

Still, I am worried about the crowing (we live in an urban area). My question is whether a rooster, once he starts crowing, will crow anytime during the day even at 10 weeks, or whether it is normal for young roosters to only crow at one time of day like ours does.

Anyone have experience with this?

thanks!

Yes they crow at different times. A rooster does not crow because the sun is coming up. A rooster crows because of change. Light, noise, wind, temp., ect. They crow when the sun comes up because it is a change.

Cackling rooster and crowing hen come to no good end.

one of my moms hens crows occasionally - and it IS a hen - she's the only one out there that lays a white egg.....

Post a pic. One can not tell a hen by the number of points on the comb or tips of wings. It sounds like you have a Rooster not a hen. He is just coming into himself also as he gets older he will crow more. BTW if they comb is red you have a rooster.
