We have a Americana breed hen that we saw eating an egg. We have had eggs break before but we didn't know why. We locked her in a mesh cage for the afternoon but we don't know it that will help. With our coop design roll-away nest boxes aren't really an option. She is one of our favorite hens and we really don't want to get rid of her if we can help it. Do you have any suggestions for us? Please help.

I have read on this website that possible reasons are a low protein diet.
Some believe in feeding their hens crushed eggshells for calcium, BUT others think it encourages hens to eat their
own eggs. [IMG] I don't know if this helps but I do know the answer is somewhere in this website-try searching "hens eating eggs".
    Good Luck
