Hen eats raw eggs

I accidentally broke the egg that they scarfed down. It was outside and I don't know if they are smart enough to realize the eggs they lay are the same thing as what they consumed outside! LOL! I'm hoping they aren't smart enough anyway. LOL! I had a cool polish that I got from someone else that was supposed to be a female. It ended up being a rooster and I had to give him away.

I've been really lucky since the hens ate that egg! They haven't eaten any more. I have found a couple that looked like somebody pecked at them but no broken or eaten eggs. I was wondering if one of the babies pecked at them.

Quite often egg eating starts by accident. A curious hen or any accidental break. The problem spreads as they make the association of eggs as food. Your hens might eat an egg and you could never have it happen again. Most often that is not the case I would watch them closely for any signs. Even if they don't eat the eggs if you sell them as I do you can't sell a pecked egg. That's why I use the Solway roll out nest.

I am still watching for sure. I do sell eggs to a few people I work with. I kept the two pecked ones and used them myself.

Today my Ameraucana laid an egg outside for no good reason.....maybe the heat.. She hadn't been on the nest all day then just dropped her egg. Well it broke and she and the other 3 girls devoured it including the shell! Now I am all worried they will develop an egg eating habit! NEVER had them eat eggs before today.! :hit
They have been good girls....any advice? When I'm home I check the nests frequently. I have no idea why she just decided. to drop her egg on the ground. Unless it's too hot in the coop. Heat index is 99 here today!
I give them calcium and yogurt . They have 18% protein feed and plenty of mealworms.

Mine haven't eaten an egg since the one I broke! I grabbed the shell quickly and they ate it so fast I don't think they even realized it was an egg! Good luck!
