Watching Chicken TV...
When I let my hens out this morning, one of my hens was completely cut open!! It's on the underside of her by her feet. There's blood all over their perch and then in the nest box. I don't know what to do and am nervous to touch her and make it worse! Please help!

Any idea what happened? Do you have an avian vet? The first thing I would do it get her out of the coop, the other chickens will peck at her and get her inside and into a quiet place where you can clean her up and assess the wound if you can't take her to a vet.

I have no idea how it happened. I've been trying to find something that she could get hung on in the coop but I can't find anything.. We don't have an avian vet, that I know of, but I can call around. I'll try to catch her so I can clean it up some.

Here are some pictures I kind of got.

I'm so sorry. I agree about the impalement, that was what I thought when I saw it. Check your coop for splintered wood, nails/screws that have worked their way loose. Check in the nest boxes, too. Especially the roosts and anywhere along where she might fly down to the floor. Good luck!

Is there any way that a predator, like a raccoon, could have reached through and snagged hold?

You need to get her into a enclosed, heated area and clean up that wound. She is going to get infected walking around outside and/or flies are going to lay in the wound and maggots will start hatching.

I don't think that a raccoon could get in, but you never know. This is what my coop looks like and I also have a Great Pyrenees that guards the yard.

I've gotten her in a cage and inside now. How should I clean her wound? Sorry for all the questions I've never worked with a injury before, only sicknesses.
