Hen filleted open!

I'm so sorry. I agree about the impalement, that was what I thought when I saw it. Check your coop for splintered wood, nails/screws that have worked their way loose. Check in the nest boxes, too. Especially the roosts and anywhere along where she might fly down to the floor. Good luck!

Okay, that's what I was thinking too. The pool of blood is just sitting right where she perches like it just happened while she was sleeping.

 that looks bad.

She is a Polish yes?
They are prone to crazy flying if startled. Look up high for anything she could of slammed into also.

Saline rinse, not thinking I would stitch it, antibiotic ointment without pain killer, make a wrap of sterile gauze and apply lots of antibiotic ointment then make a wrap out of a soft cotton T-shirt to hold it in place.

I would get antibiotics from the feed store and get her started on it.
The location of the injury is going to make keeping the wrap on it very hard.

Keep her crated and keep treating the wound. I recommend changing the bandaging daily for the first week then every third day for the second week.

They can surprise us and heal well.

:fl for her and :hugs for you.

Thank you so very much!! Yes, she is a Polish I hadn't thought of her flying and hurting herself. Okay, we'll make a run the the feed store and get those things. What antibiotics should we get? We have an Orscheln's and a Tractor Supply.

Thank you for the :hugs too!

I would have to defer to @aart, @azygous or @Eggcessive on the antibiotic. Probably tylan?

If heading to the feed store grab some vet wrap too. It sticks to itself only. Just don't wrap it to tight. It is stretchy so easy to get to tight.

You will be looking to just hold it in place not squish her. ;)

Perhaps a spray antibiotic? But the people there might be able to point you to the best ingestables... Also if you want to save that skin i think your best bet is to get her into a heated cage (basically adult sized incubator/brooder and remove what feathers you can on the flap and around the wound that way you can treat abd clean it more effectivly. Flush out all the bad stuff with saline making sure there is no debrie and sanitise with very light spray of hydrogen peroxide. Then close up the wound with whatever you got... Superglue is a good one believe it or not (i use it on myself way better than bandages) but just try to keep it around the edges or best is to just line up the skin and dot it on the tear line, light spray with water will make it set of your unsure it's dry. Also dont seal it up tight just get it closed (so dot the edge basically... And make sure you don't glue yourself to her, wear gloves). A gash that big is going to need to drain infection so keep it minimal around the bottom.

I would not glue it. Just saying cause that will be very painful for her as well as making every move pull at it.
It doesn't even slightly sting, like I said this is something I perform on MYSELF for my own gashes. It's totally painless and ideally it doesn't actually go into the wound it just glues the edges of the skin together so it can heal. If it's lined up precicely and there is no infection it can heal very fast. Bandages don't have that benifit and you can't see what's going on instead you unwrap it once a day to a horror show of leaking fluids and then replace the bandages

If it does get in the wound I have found the sting very very painful. This is a huge wound to try and glue.

Having cut the end of my thumb off at work a year ago I will lean on the bandage and keep clean over the glue it shut.

Just my opinion.

The big thing here is helping the hen. Up to the OP if they choose glue or bandage.
