How old is your hen that is loosing feathers? Most chickens that are over a year old loose feathers in the late summer or fall. Some have a more obvious loss than others. The loss happens as the new feathers begin to grow. This is what is called molting. The slightest touch from another bird at this time will often knock a pile of feathers off.
