Hen had wing pulled off - question about bandaging

Well she's been in a box in the back room. I've been leaving the wound unbandaged so that air can get to it, and no signs of infection yet. She's acting pretty perky, too. My chickens aren't really pets so I am not going to take this bird to the vet, if she gets infected I'm going to just cull her unfortunately. Having said that, my sister is a vet tech so if she doesn't seem to be making a significant recovery by this weekend I'll have her come out and take a look at the hen. But so far she does seem to be doing pretty well. She's a good eater, too.

As far as the bone, I have no idea what I'm going to do. I guess it depends on how well she heals. I might not shorten it necessarily, but I might file down the sharp edges so that it at least won't hurt anything... but like I said, that all depends on how it heals.

Happy to hear she is doing so well. Maybe sis can even give you some tips on what to do with the bone. might not have to do anything. but great news.

I'm not sure about the bone thing. There could be bone marrow within the bone. There could be potential bleeding to contend with if you cut it...ugh! I'm getting the willies just thinking about it. I'll be totally amazed if she makes it! Keep us posted. The poor girl!

I would recommend you give your sister a call, if you haven't already. I think you'll find that wound will not heal with bone sticking out of it.

I am by no means a medical person, but leaving the bone exposed to the air makes me think of possible infections, since it is exposed to all of the bacteria/microorganisms in the air ?? Hopefully your sis can help and good luck!! I hope she makes it!! You can call her "Stumpy"

Alright, checking with the sis on the bone issue

It would be a shame to put her down, she's not acting under the weather at all.
