Hi Folks, Was just wondering If anyone had ever come across a chook with a broken foot and what the outcome was, I have Henrietta, One of my Hamburg hens in the house atm,, (after an incident with one of our gundogs the other day - Monday, and it is now Thurs) she's very happy may I add - healthy appetite, always pleased to see us, and alert enough.. Although she's stuggling to walk at present and one foot, (The sore one) is clamped, as if shes holding something. The only thing I can think it could be is its broken, but was wondering if anyone had ever come across the same kind of thing, and what the outcome was?!

She maybe is playing me abit, enjoying being spoilt and getting alot of freshly boiled eggs, Oatmeal, Yoghurt and Apple, all her favourite treats :)... The foot is still not right though and I'll do anything to nurse her back to her healthy usual self!

Feedback would be much appriciated :D..

A xx

I have had one hen with a hock injury and one with an unknown leg injury with a broken toe. Both healed fine and ocassionally limp.

Leg injuries take forever to heal. The clenching of the foot is a concern however. Look up here on BYC how to correct spraddle leg and curled toes. You can make a makeshift shoe for her to put her foot in the proper position.

Is her leg or foot really hot?
Does she flex her toes at all when you try to manipulate them?
Can she stand with any weight on that leg?
Is there any swelling or discoloration?

No swelling No discoloration, Tries but cant put weight on it, Her foot is really hot and yes she can flex it if i put my hand out she will try and hold on, this is what I cant make sense of, Will have a look, Thanks for the advice, will do everything I can to sort it :/. She's in the house and I'm not a hurry to put her out, she as as long as it will take.

Just hope it will mend.

Thanks again, Anna x

Well that does not sound too bad. If she can flex the toes and move them that does not indicate a broken foot usually...she would most likely not be able to flex and move those toes. Airline fractures are always possible. Some things you can do that may help her.

Hamburg are not huge birds so one a day will be fine...give her one baby aspirin a day for a few days then take a break and repeat. This will help for her pain and the swelling.

Increase her protein with scrambled eggs or even grilled chicken once a day

Get those toes back flat and make sure she she has plenty of time to heal...

good luck with her. :)

Thankyou:), Will try her with abit of Asprin, I've just gone up with more scrambled egg for her and she's been moving about, was other side of her box. She's treats all roulnd her and chirping away to me, Fingers crossed she will be fine and all will heal! :D
