Hi all

Our flock was attacked by a fox 2 nights ago. One was killed and another was badly injured. The injured one has several bite marks, one of which is a deep wound to her wing which has an exposed bone.

Here are some characteristics...
Heavy bird, 2 years old
Can stand but struggles to bend to feed. Will eat & drink when offered to her beak
Breathing heavily at times, possibly has a temperature
Maggots in wound which we flush with saline and pick out with tweezers
Today the skin is green. Is this bruising or infection?
Able to struggle a little

Is there hope for her?

Welcome to BYC. Sorry about losing your hen and having this one injured. Bruising using is seen as blue green skin in chickens. Have you used anything stronger, such as betadine to clean the wound? Betadine (povidone iodine,) chlorhexidene, and Vetericyn wound spray are good to use a s a disinfectant, while an antibiotic ointment can be used on wounds to help prevent infection. Are there any more maggots hatching on her wound? Where are you located (country or state?) Is she able to stand and walk? Is she eating and drinking? A dog crate, laundry basket, or a bathtub is a good place to keep an injured chicken where they can stand and walk or reach food and water.

Thanks for your answer.

I have used TCP (phenol antiseptic) along with saline. I'll get hold of some antibiotics as well.

She can stand and is eating and drinking, especially when the food is held - she seems to be in pain when pecking for food at floor level. She is inside, in a large box, big enough to move about, should she wish.

Her wing is blue-green so might be badly bruised.

I am in London, by the way.

If you can get cephalexin, clindamycin, or Baytril, those would be good antibiotics I think, for bone infection. Asprin can be given to chickens for pain at a dosage of 81 mg orally twice a day, or 325mg for every 240 ml of water.
