Hi, I hope someone has some experience with this problem. I have an almost year old hen (I think she's a Jaerhon, but she's banty-sized). About 2 months or so ago, she began developing what looked to me like a giant boil on the side of her head almost directly below her left eye and slightly back. At first, it was reddish and stuck out about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch. It had no feather growth upon it. However, the hen had no problems eating/drinking, etc. and seemed otherwise healthy. At it's worst, it seemed to cause her eye to close to something like a slit. I surmised it was an insect bite, something had gotten into her eye, an infected peck, but wasn't sure. I haven't seen any oozing from the growth itself, her eye, or any place else. As time passed, she continued as if nothing was wrong and the "tumor" or "growth" seemed to fade from a reddish to a light pinkish color and subsided somewhat, but not too much. I noticed last night that there appears another growth below and slightly to the left of the first and it's forcing her eye close even more. I did see her eating and drinking. Would anyone care to hazard a guess as to what this could possible be. None of the other 40+ hens have developed a similar growth. I've never heard of this happening. I generally don't lavish much in the way of medical care upon my hens, but don't like to see them suffer. Thanks for any input. Ken at Fancy Fibers Farm
