Hen hatching eggs

Well, we are up to 5 fluffy adorable chicks. I don't think I'm ever going to be able to eat chicken again. ;) 4 are from the Wyandotte mix eggs and 1 Splash Maran. I am praying the one splash is a pullet. (I cannot keep roosters.) It is hot still here and we are supposed to have a record heat wave through the weekend till Monday. I'll be sticking around so I can keep an eye on these gals. :)

Yes, She's seriously pleased with herself. She's been really careful with the babies so far and attentive. Even when they peck at her eye!?

As of this morning there are 6 and there are 3 eggs left. Today is the official hatch day so I think I should let the other eggs sit a couple more days. Hen is still sitting so she knows best i would assume.

Yep, I'd just let her set until she takes the babies off the nest. The other three might hatch, but if they were all set at the same time, all that are going to hatch generally do within 24 hours or so of each other.

Awh! Adorable babies! I'm so glad your broody went well.

My recent attempt at letting a previously good broody try with purchased shipped day old Silkies went horribly bad. I don't know what spooked her but she wasn't acting motherly and she had pecked some of them when I checked in the morning.

One poor chick (Meyers Meal Maker surprise) passed away, but the rest who were pecked are recovering nicely. I've put them under a heat lamp and will move them to their separate coop later when they're feathered. The broody is back on her nest for now with no eggs or chicks.

So you just can't predict these things and just need to stay on top and have a plan B ready.

Enjoy those new babies and watching them pop out from under her feathers!
