i had four surviving girls. then i got five chicks to replace some i had lost (to my dog). of the five, four turned out to be roosters. lately, the boys have rushed out of the coop in the morning & stand around the pop door like a gauntlet waiting for the girls to come out. then they rush the girls & give 'em heck for the first several minutes every morning. a lot of screaming, yelling and running. the girls have become reluctant to come out of the coop in the morning.

a friend took two of the roosters (thank goodness), and today was the first day in a long time since my girls have had a peaceful day. one more rooster to go - but i think he's destined for the freezer (even though he is a scrawny guy).

that will leave me with the big black australorp boy and a harmonious flock.

And that's why there are recommendations for ratios of roos to hens. Good on you for getting rid of the extras and taking responsibility for your hens.

x2, they deserve the easystreet life for all their hard work, making eggs.
