Hen hit by car!

That's amazing! I always worry about my Polish and her faring living off of a road. I'm so very happy to hear your girl made it. Polish aren't known for their great capability to escape fated conflicts but you have quite a tuffy over there.

You're right, PolishPrincess. They aren't the most savvy, i think b/c they can't see as well. But, I will say my 2 polish are the toughest of my flock! They don't know how small they are. I just hope I can get her to start eating, or that her beak will quit bleeding every time she attempts to eat. And I haven't seen her drink yet...

She's still a bit lethargic, but responds when I talk to her, and all her appendages seem to be moving properly. I'm keeping my fingers crossed with her.

I did put antibiotics in her water as well.

Moody Chicken- when your chicken's beak cracked, was he able to eat? How did you feed him? It almost seems like she's avoiding eating because she knows it hurts...I'm wondering if she'll get over that.

Well, there is hope;

I had a Rooster get hit crossing the road, he lost half the top beak...try using fake fingernail glue (just be careful with it)...fed her soft cat food from the can, and other soft foods...for a few days...depending on the damage...she will start to realize that her beak is strong again:)

In the SKIN?!?! Do you know how bad that has to hurt?! If your vet isn't comfortable hitting a vein they could at least do an intra-cardiac stick to put them out of their misery! The whole point is that it's suppose to be fast...you'd be better off wringing their necks than injecting pentobarbitol in the skin.

can you try putting blood stop powder on her beak where the crack is?? Like the stuff used on hooves if clipped to short....I don't know if it's ok to put that close to the face/mouth, but it might be worth a shot....

Hope your bird makes it and everything turns out ok....

I am not a chicken person but would super glue work if carefully put on the beak?
I do know it was first made to stick people skin together without staples.

Seems like getting food and water into her is a priority. Does her beak bleed even with a fine mash or small stuff (like chick starter)? She probably isn't up to pellets.

It seems that in addition to the superglue or similar, you need something to stiffen the beak. I use superglue on torn fingernails along with a tea bag for reinforcement - see this site (not my site, but I have done this type of repair before.) http://www.pineapple-girl.com/fingernail.htm

Superglue
alone doesn't work - I think on a nail (or beak) there is not enough little ridges for the superglue to hold onto.

Good luck, hope your chicken makes it.
