Hen is breaking her eggs

My cochin did the same thing, took about two weeks, and she had been laying for about a month. At first, she would lay indiscriminately-on the ground, in the coop, where ever looked good. Then it's like she discovered that what was coming out of her wasn't a big poop, and needed to be "checked out". She pecked the ends of her eggs (same as you, the membrane didn't break, so we ate them anyway), but with her, it was just a matter of time. She didn't ever eat them and I do give them crushed shells for calcium, but now she doesn't peck at them. She also just lays in her box (hallelujia!) I think it's part of the learning curve of being a chicken.

Mine is doing the same thing now! After a week of similar behavior she has started laying in the nesting box. I guess they just have to figure things out!

We had an egg pecking issue about a month ago--I retrieved the eggs regularly for a few days, gave started mixing oyster shell and crushed eggshell, and haven't had a problem since. We have a porcelain egg in each nesting box (found at the feed store), and yes, they seem to prefer scratching away the hay and laying directly on the boards--I try to add to the hay every few days because of this.
