Hi, so I have a Rhode Island Red and she is laying eggs without the hard exterior and she is not laying them in the nesting boxes. She lays them wherever she is at the time. None of my other Reds are doing this. So why is she doing this and why is she the only one?

Hi there. I’m a little late to this thread but found it searching for “shell-less egg”.

Has your girl’s issue resolved? I ask because I have a RIR, 24 wks, just starting to lay and doing the same thing. I’ve found three “soft shell” eggs in the shavings beneath the roost and today she laid one in a nest box, which I took to be a good sign!(photo below) Today’s seemed to have a bit of a thin crust which cracked but the membrane remained intact, and that seems like a favorable indication too, that the calcium covering section is gearing up.

The contents of the two intact eggs were normal, as was the case in the ruptured ones, I believe, though some had soaked into the shavings.

I thinks it’s been a couple of weeks since your post. Do you think it’s all worked out? 🤞. Many thanks!
