Hen keeping her tail down and walking funny

hen has been walking funny, keeping her tail down, and sleeping on the floor of the coop at night...she’s going on three...I don’t know the exact length of time, but roughly a month or so...She actually is a little bit chunky

Have her feel of the abdomen for any swelling/bloat or feeling of fluid. She may have a reproductive/internal laying disorder like Egg Yolk Peritonitis, Ascites, cancer or tumors. Symptoms include walking like a penguin (funny gait), sometimes swelling/bloat or fluid filled abdomen, holding the tail down, going off food/water, runny droppings or sometimes droppings that look like they have egg in them.

Sleeping on the floor indicates that she is most likely too uncomfortable to roost. Have her examine her for any external parasites while she's checking her over - sometimes a hen that is not active is not preening/dust bathing and can become infested as well.

If vet care is possible, that's always best. A fecal float can rule out worms. If it is a repro disorder, then there is not much that can be done unless there is fluid accumulated in the abdomen - sometimes this can be drained to give the hen some relief and make her more comfortable for a short period of time. Antibiotics may help fight infection for a short period of time, but they are not a cure and would also be considered supportive care and giving comfort.

fwiw- Jersey Giants are consider dual purpose, so they are good egg layers and used for meat. https://livestockconservancy.org/index.php/heritage/internal/jerseygiant
