Hen keeps one eye closed

I think Tinkerbell’s eye is doing better. She is keeping it open more. The white stuff is thinner, more like a film. I have tried to squeeze it out like the video showed but it will not budge. Tried a Q tip with no luck. But it is thinner, not a thick mucus. I will keep up my routine of warm wet compresses, flushing it out with warm water and putting that medicine into her eye. Wished I could get a better picture, will keep trying.

That’s good news. I hope it continues to improve. Perhaps her nictitating membrane is infected? Yes pics would help. If it’s helping, I agree, keep up with your routine.

If you can get some Terramycin, it may help a lot more.

Here try this:

Here is a better picture. She is keeping her eye open more but I don’t know if she is seeing much.

That is a good picture, thank you.

Can you see an eyeball behind this tissue? Is there a chance this is her eyeball dying? It seems like there might be less swelling, is that accurate?

i think it looks better, less swelling. As you can see, she has her eye open without me prying it open. I can sort of see her eyeball but not the pupil. I hope her eye is not dying. I wish that white layer would dissolve and disappear. It is blocking her eyesight, if the eye is still working.
She is back to her normal self, except that she is now lower on the pecking order. The others are aware her eye is not normal.
I am continuing same treatment I have been. Sure appreciate the advice from y’all. Keeps up my spirits.

A lot of questions, I know, sorry. But can you see her nictitating membrane by chance?

By all accounts it just seems like that - whatever it is - shouldn’t be there, it seems like pus to me, but I don’t want to have you try to pull it out and it is attached or hurts her. Does it bother her if you try to (gently) remove that piece?

I tried to gently brush it out without success. I am not sure about the nictitating membrane (I did not know what that was when you first mentioned it). Each morning I flush her eye with warm water, hoping to dislodge that layer. I don’t think it is pus but that is based on experience with infections in humans, not chicken eyes. LOL.

I have seen pictures of some whitish yellow plaques covering an eye like this, and they are usually stuck tight. You really should use saline to rinse the eye, since water is very irritating to eyes and mucous membranes. Saline is found in all drug stores for flushing eyes, nostrils, and wounds, and can be made with 1/2 tsp of salt to each 8 ounce cup of water. Bring it to a boil, reduce to low simmer for 15 minutes, and then cool before placing in a clean jar. Also try a warm wet compress held over the eye for 5 or more minutes. The saline rinsing and antibiotic ointment may loosen it enough that it could be removed with tweezers while someone else holds her wrapped in a towel. The eye might already be blind, but it will likely be blind if left like this.

Thank you for the information on saline. I will start using that for awhile to see if it loosens that layer some before trying to lift it off. And I don’t think I am holding the warm compress on long enough. So I’ll hold it on longer as well. Thanks again.
