hi i have had my hens now for about 1 month and everything has been ok with them , i feed the layers pellets ( which they have access to at all times)and a handful of corn in the evening, they free range around my garden for about 3 hours a day when i get home from work and rest of time they are in there run .. i have been getting 2 eggs daily from my 3 hens , but today whilst walking around garden one of them laid an egg like jelly and also a yolk seperate next to it,, am i doing something wrong or is it normal.?.

Hi John-

That's totally normal for a new layer.....you'll see shell-less eggs, tiny eggs, wrinkly eggs.....I like to call those strange eggs practice eggs, or hiccups.

thankyou for your quick replies, i'll carry on with what i'm doing then ,,,do you think i need grit , some people tell me to get some, others say they will get it when free ranging in the soil

If you have sand/pebbles/stones in your yard you do not need grit. If it is all soft soil maybe yes. If you are worried about it, then grit is cheap, easy and relieves worries. Good Luck
