Hen laid strange egg - only about an inch long

It's a dreary, rainy day here, but I got some pics of the suspected early layer - if it wasn't this one then it was another one from the same batch, who is even slightly smaller.

You can see the un-shed chick down on her head and neck.

This one's a close-up of her head, showing that her comb and wattles haven't grown yet.

That's her on the left, next to the other possible suspect.

These two were purchased the first week of April, along with 19 others we lost to a neighbor's dog (the neighbor paid for our financial loss, but not for our crying kids

). I let them out with the big birds for a few hours per day in a run that's about 40 square feet per bird, with my henhouse attached, and I have a second, smaller run with a plastic doghouse in it these guys mostly hang out in. I also have a 200-square-foot moveable pen - not quite a chicken tractor, but safer than free-ranging with that killer dog on the loose - that they get to spend a little time in, which I move around to fresh forage on a regular basis.

Here's the strange egg I found today.

This is the first weird egg she has laid, usually there perfect. Should I be worried?

No. It happens when the shell is formed. Nothing to be concerned about. I've had eggs with "tails", eggs with a membrane/tissue on the outside of the shell, etc. Just weird glitches.

onfurtherreview, that chick did not lay an eggf, I promise you. It's a baby with non working reproductive organs. If she passed tissue, that may signal some issue. Are you sure it isn't some sort of larvae?

Thanks Speckledhen, I feel much better now. She laid another egg and its back to normal. :)

I'm not sure what is wrong with one of my hens. We found tiny egg in nest box. The egg was only about 1 inch long, the shell was rough in texture, and the shell seemed thicker than most shells. I have not cracked it open so I don't know what the inside is like. Has anybody else had this happen?

I have two hens in their second year of laying, and five that started this winter. They have all been laying nice large eggs so I don't know what is going on.

Herself

One of my girls laid a fart too :D
