I have 5 red sex link hens and they just started laying about 2 weeks ago. And today I got my first shell-less egg. What can I do to prevent this? They are 20 weeks old and feeding them chick feed with oyster shells on the side. Should I start to switch feed? I still have 6 chickens that are not laying yet.

Got this light color egg too and it's a rough shell and feels thin too. Not sure what hen laid this one.

Thank you!

New layers can have all kinds of issues. It's 100% natural and I wouldn't worry about it unless it starts to become a daily issue.

As for feed just use up your chick feed if thats what you want to do and then swap to all flock. Oyster shell on the side is just fine.

You are feeding them correctly, sometimes new layers have kinks to work out. I wouldn't worry about.
Thank you! What do you recommend for feed? I have only hens and have no plans for a rooster. But I might want to add some more hens in the next couple of years. Should I keep feeding a chick feed or all flock feed?

You can feed either all flock or non medicated chick feed with oyster shell on the side. I personally prefer the chick feed for its higher protein. (and it's a bit cheaper than all flock in my area $18 vs $21)

I feed a Non-Medicated Starter-Grower feed to my hens 14 months old Red sex-links, it's cheaper than an All-Flock/Flock Raiser feed.
I also offer Oyster Shells separately.

If you want to switch to a Layers feed, I would get one with 18% Protein. GC
Thank you. I'm pretty happy with my chick feed. Just wanted to make sure this issue, wasn't food-related.
