Hen Lethargic, Not Eating or Drinking, Eyes Closed, Laying In Box

I'm sorry. I am new to this and I didn't see your post about what happened to your hen. We aren't sure if that's what was wrong but we had her put down today.

@Knaack Its fine, and im so sorry about your hen. Although next time youll know what it is and that it can be treated.. A lot of things that vets put chickens down for, the people on backyard chickens have gone through and found ways to help the hen and fix them.

No problem. Since your new to chickens, you also might want to follow some of the members who have posted quite a bit. You will receive notifications when they reply to a thread. My chicken's behavior has been almost exactly like your chicken's! I live in California and I have three chickens. 1 Rhode Island Red, and 2 Buff Orpingtons. We have a medium sized coop and are regularly cleaning it out and let the chickens roam around our backyard just to scavenge for bugs and weeds. I opened the coop door this morning and notice one of our Buffs named Honey was standing there blankly while her two sisters ran out and waited for me to feed them(As I usually feed them and refill their water bowl every morning). I watched her for a minute and wondered what was wrong and began to feel worried. None of our chickens had ever had this problem before. I had a bread biscuit and was feeding it to them as a treat and I threw a piece at her feet and she looked at it, pecked it, and went back to staring at me.
At, first I thought she wasn't seeing right or their was something wrong with her vision. But, I had reached out and she turned around and looked at the wall of the coop. I went out to check on her at night and she was sleeping on the floor along with my Rhode Island Red. I did some research and I found out they may be cold and want to sleep somewhere where it is warm. Honey was also lying close to the ground and my other two were acting sluggish. Don't worry, I'm sure it has something to do with the dramatic change of weather.(From 97 degrees to 55 and 40 degrees) So, I covered the coop with leftover metal sheets of housing and I'm planning to cover it with a tarp or something. You should do some extra research just to be sure.
:) Thank you :D ;D

Hi your information was great I just found one of my hens with all the same symptoms. Yes she was egg bound. I have managed to remove the egg. She is a little brighter but still lethargic and not eating and drinking. I have her inside where I can watch her overnight and we'll see how she goes

Hello people. I just read out whole topic, i was very upset too about what has happened to your hen :( this same thing was passed by my hen too, i took her to the animal doctor.. they told me to put some olive oil in her vent because if there is egg stucked in her vent, then its easy for hen to put it out. i even gave her olive oil to drink aswell, and now shes alrite eating and drinking.. Hope it Helps :)

P.S Sorry for my bad english

My hen too is not eating or drinking. But she hurt her leg from jumping up the 2nd floor of the coop. Her leg is strained. I removed her from the kennel( 10x10x6 surrounding the coop) and brought her inside. I have been turning her from side to side. She had a seizure this morning. I have antibiotics at home and colloidal silver. I think, if she's still alive, when I get home, I'll give her some electrolytes, antibiotics and colloidal silver. Any thing else?
thanks

I have a rooster that’s sick. Don’t know what happened one day good next won’t move puffy feathers eyes closed. I have been giving him vitamin water but he won’t eat. I thought he was dead for a minute but still breathing just sick. I did let them out to free range on day. He’s the only one sickly. I separated him from the rest just in case. Any suggestions? Very concerned. We don’t have vets that deal with livestock type animals.

In most bird species, if egg bound they can’t poop I thought? I have a 3 year old hen with beautiful feathers that has never looked better just standing around and not foraging. At dusk, she didn’t coop up. Butt a little poopy and liquid poop... seemed to not have great balance. Any ideas? Her sister started with similar symptoms last fall and eventually died after I thought she was on the mend from 3 weeks in the house being hand fed. I never could figure it out. Treated for worms and cocci and lost her a couple weeks after putting back outside. Any ideas?
