Hen limping!!

@ChickConcierge It looks like a sprain possibly higher up possibly in her hip or between the femur and tibia fibula joint. I am not a vet, so if she is worse in the next few days, I would try and get her xrayed. If she develops any seeming numbness or curled under toes, let us know.

It does seem like the injury is higher up on her leg. I will keep a close eye on her and keep you posted. Thank you.

My hen, Drumstick, is normally very healthy and doesn’t often have injuries.

This morning I noticed she was limping on her right foot. I tried to figure out what was causing it, but I didn’t notice anything. I provided photos.

Edit: She had poop on her foot and I washed it off the best I could but it’s still visible

Mine did the same thing. She is till doing it. Hope she is ok

My favorite hen also started limping yesterday. It’s worse today. Can anyone take an educated guess as to what part of the leg might be injured based on the video? Her foot looks clean and soft and I can’t see an injury or feel any heat or anything out of place.
Ginger is a 4 year old normally healthy and top chicken of 12 hens.

that's great my hen didn't limp like that. It was different.

I had a pullet who started limping and ended up dying, despite two weeks of antibiotics, pain meds and an x-ray. Go and see an avian vet ASAP if you can, good luck.

My vet sent a copy of the x-ray off to some avian specialists. They came back with possible cellulitis (so not definite) and we were going to start her on some stronger antibiotics, but I think by this time she had developed a secondary infection as she had lost interest in eating and drinking. The vet knocked her out to give her fluids and clip her vent feathers but she was having difficulty breathing on her side and her pulse was fading fast. He brought her to me in a towel and she died in my arms. Don’t leave it too late to take her to the vet.

It can take weeks for a sprain/strain to fully resolve.

If limp is really bothering them by inhibiting their normal activities too much, I will isolate them in a crate to 'force' rest for a day or two. Letting them out late in day, an hour before roost time, to give them a stretch and evaluate their mobility, then decide if they need another day and put them back in crate off roost after dark. Repeat stretch and eval the next day until they are better.

Best to put crate right in coop or run so bird is still 'with' the flock.
I like to use a fold-able wire dog crate (24"L x 18"W x 21"H) with smaller mesh(1x2) on bottom of crate under tray.
Then you can put tray underneath crate to better observe droppings without it being stepped in. If smaller mesh is carefully installed, tray can still be used inside crate.
