Hen living alone ?

I would try to find a local breeder since you only want one. If you can find homes for 9 chicks, PapaBrooder sells chicks in batches of 10. There are many different breeds of good quality and range from 1 day - 6 weeks (you specify age).

I will definetly look into that.. What breeds would you recommend for a friendly bird? The only exception is I cannot have a loud bird and it would be a shame to get one and have it be just that. Do you tink if a nice quiet bird grew up with the new bird it would take after her traits ? Anyways thanks for the link.

Personally I would go for an Easter Egger. They are usually pretty quite and sweet. Of course, you could always get a variety of chick breeds and keep the most silent.

As great as an idea that is, between my mother and I we'd just get too attached and wouldn't want to give any away.. But a nice easter egger is exactly what I was thinking too. Hopefully my bird would like another. Do you think if a quiet bird like mine raises one that there would be a small chance for the new bird to take on her qualities ?

If anything, we do have a local feed store, i don't know when they'll have Ameraucanas again and with the weather a little chillier now, they may not sell chicks again until well after the new year

I think that anything is possible with the new bird. However, I know that children mimic their parents quite a bit so hopefully chickens do the same. Good luck with finding a chick.

Unlikely. Your hen will not necessarily try to raise the chick at all. If she is broody when you get the chick, she MIGHT adopt it as her own, but even that is iffy. Non-broody hens most often ignore, harass, try to kill, or eat a chick.

Yeah I mean she might not raise it as her own but I don't think she'd get aggressive with another. She has been around other very young hens and they'd attack her before she did anything. At the most I'd just want them to be friends so they can just do they're chicken tasks in the yard with each other. And sleep together in the coop at night.

In my opinion, with only the one very calm hen, you're probably fine. I would keep on eye on them for the first couple of days though.

That's what I'd hope for although I wouldn't make guarantees.. So if I do get a hen/ chick
From the papa brooder place you mentioned I can get a single bird and specify its age as well? An Easter egger is sorta what I have in mind

If you got an order bird (6 weeks min) you could have maybe 1 shipped. He ships younger birds in groups of 10. You could order 10 easter egger and select your favorite. Then give the rest away or at cost
