I've been noticing that my barred rock hen looks to have a huge lump on her right side (in front of her legs). It's about the size of an egg. She's been talking an awful lot lately and I've been thinking (HOPING) she is going to lay soon. I've never read about them getting a lump on their throat/chest so I'm wondering if this is normal??

Total newb here, I'll try to get a pic to post.

Thanks for any help!!

It is more than likely her crop. The crop is where food is stored before it goes to the proventriculus (stomach) and gizzard. When they eat a lot it tends to get very full and stick out like this. If you feel it, you might be able to feel food inside. This is nothing to worry about and completely normal, but do keep an eye out and make sure it is empty (or nearly empty) by the next day. If it's not empty then there may be some impaction issues.

Thank you! I just googled this as well and decided it must be her crop. She must have gobbled up a ton of food today!

Thanks for your reply! :)
