Hello fellow chicken lovers,
1) What type of bird , age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.) I have a Americana hen that was hatched here and came from my flock, she recently turned one. She feels a little bit lighter then she should be but not skinny.
2) What is the behavior, exactly. A few days ago when I went to let them out of their coop she want coming out and when she tried to walk towards the door she just went in circles. I brought up in a cage on my porch, gave her nutri-drench and a vitamin electrolyte water And half a baby aspirin morning and night. The next day she seemed better so I let her back with the flock but now she is turning her head and randomly falling On the same side Or loosing balance. I have back on my porch now.
3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms? About 4 day’s
4) Are other birds exhibiting the same symptoms? No
5) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma. Not that I have found or seen
6) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation. One of my thoughts was that one of the other hens or rooster might have pecked her to hard on her head as they are pretty feisty when it comes to dinner time or treats
7) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all. She’s still eating the same layer food and I’ve been giving her backyard chickens healthyflock tab water and durvet vitimans and electrolytes. She is also getting a small amount of yogurt to get the aspirin.
8) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc. It is runny but it more than likely bc it’s so hot out (Florida)
9) What has been the treatment you have administered so far? Aspirin, and nutri-drench
10 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet? I’m not in place to afford another expensive vet bill right now so I’m hoping I can self treat her
12) Describe the housing/bedding in use For the cage she is in right now, it’s a large dog crate with the pelleted pine bedding expanded so it’s soft and fluffy. Her normal coop is a 10’x20’ with second stories and either side of the coop, one side has nesting boxes and one side has perches for them to sleep on. They free range all day Wether permitting and get put up at night

What is healthyflock tab water? Please post a photo of the all the products you are using.

Are you giving Durvet Vitamins/Electrolytes and Poultry Nutri-drench? I would choose just one to give if that's what you are wanting to do.
Stop the Aspirin.

Check her crop - it should be empty/flat first thing in the morning before she eats/drinks.

Walking in circles and turning the head randomly/falling over sounds like a neurological issue.
This is what I would do - go the WalMart and get a bottle of Vitamin E (400IU) and a bottle of B-Complex. Give her 1 Vitamin E softgel daily and 1/4 tablet B-Complex daily. I would stop all the other additives and give her plain fresh water to drink. I would also provide her with a scrambled egg daily along with her normal feed.

I had given her the nutri-drench a few days ago, I only gave it to her once orally. This is the water she has right now

I was going to give this to her this for a few days and I then I was going to give her the vitamin and electrolyte water again. I’ll see if I can get out tomorrow morning and get those things. What improvements should I be looking for? Thank you!

I would start her on the vitamins if possible.

Be sure to check her crop, look her over for lice/mites, etc.

No sure about your question about what improvements you should be looking for....is she not having trouble walking/losing balance, going backwards, etc.? I suppose I would look for those symptoms to improve or resolve.

Okay thank you! I’m not sure if this will help but I took a time lapse of her this morning and she’s been having these “episodes” almost like a seizure. You can’t see it in the video but her legs are in front of her and when this happens her toes partially curl. It was worse, to the point where her head was upside down under her, the video is more towards the end of what’s happening. Sometimes she is fine standing and walking in the cage and the next she’s laying down and this is happening. I’m very worried for her. I’ll be getting the vitamins in about an hour. Here is the video:

You have had some unexplained deaths and cancer in your flock from past threads. Have you ever gotten a necropsy on any lost chickens as was suggested? She is having some neurological problems, so I wonder about some type of virus or possibly Mareks disease. If you lose this one, please contact your state vet M-F early morning to see about getting a nceropsy. I would give the vitamin E orally. Usually they are pearls, and you can puncture those and give with a syringe. If it is a tablet you could cut it in half and give it in her beak or crush it into a little food.

Yes we have had a few random deaths that were out of no where. And two chickens (a rooster and his daughter) have died from some sort of tumor. I’ve been trying to convince my parents to let me have one of them get a necropsy. We have stopped getting new chickens for good as I can’t keep bringing them in if there is some disease in our yard/flock. Thank you for your help!

Sorry for all the questions but how do I give her the vitamin E as it’s a large pill
She only getting worse, looks as if she is dead laying down and keeps thrashing around
I'm very sorry she's getting worse :hugs

I know it must be hard since you've have some troubles with others passing as well.
Hard to tell in the video, but from your description it sounds like she's having neurological problems. It could very well be related to what you have going on in your flock. Marek's is something that comes to mind, but as suggested getting testing/necropsy is the only way to find out. I understand the decision to do this is not solely yours, you do need to respect your parent's wishes.

See if the vitamins make any difference, but I'm sorry to say, if she doesn't show improvement, it may be a kindness to put her out of her misery. :(
