Hen Losing Weight

Jenschickies how is your hen doing so far?

She's doing well. My husband and I really think she's improving. She wants to eat and I have actually seen her drink water. Lately she's had a rock hard crop (she's eating, but not drinking) and she actually had a squishy crop last night. Her crop is working just fine and her poop isn't that green color anymore. She will eat scratch that I toss out for them. In the am I still give her water to make sure she gets it, but I haven't supplemented food in a couple of days. She even eats her pill at night, which is nice of her lol. Hopefully she keeps improving. Thursday I take her to re check her CBC. Hopefully it goes down from the antibiotics.

Ok I missed the call so I got a voicemail. She said she's not targeting e-coli and that it's very difficult to test for e-coli in a live bird. Then she repeated that twice and did not answer original question of what kind of bacteria we are targeting. I'll have to call again tomorrow. We shall see what new info she can tell me then.
I'm all for having vets drive treatment programs, but your vet is starting to irritate me, lol. To me it seems like she's being evasive just because she senses you know about Baytril. It's true that many vets won't prescribe Baytril to poultry, but you're trying to save the life of your hen and she really should be on the best antibiotic or combination of them to treat peritonitis. True, it's hard to test for E. coli in a live bird, but based on the necropsy reports I have seen where infection was the cause of death, E. coli was listed on all of them.

I can see that. It kind of sounds like she doesn't know really what she wants to target. How is your hen today?

To me it sounds like she doesn't want to prescribe Baytril.

That's soo frustrating. If your chicken needs it, they need or they will die! You think a vet would understand that. Some understand it because they will perscribe it. But on the flip side they can get into major trouble for it. But on the flip side of that you can get it online lol!

I'm wondering if I should just go for it. She is really getting on my nerves. I was trying to look at the positive that without her I wouldn't have got to this point. She did help eliminate other possibilities, but at this point what do we have to lose?! I hate to do it, but I think after I get ahold of her today, if she still isn't cooperative whether its from not wanting to hand it over or she has no clue I may just order the Baytril. What the vet doesn't know won't hurt her.

As of this morning I saw her take a few bites. A few days ago she would take one bite and stop so this is good :) I wish I didn't have to be at work today so I could keep a closer eye on her. I'm very hopeful that this is her turn around point.

Jenschickies I am so glad to hear that she's doing better.

Thanks Bay Bay Peepers. Your plan sound good. That's what I would do. :fl for your hen to keep getting better.

I'd really like the vet to say something like "Baytril would be the best choice, but I cannot prescribe it do the the legality of it".

Ok, I'll try to pry it out of her :) shouldn't be much different than what I've been doing to her so far haha prying out every teeny tiny bit of info I can get from her.

It annoys me that you have to pry at all, lol. Ask her, if all drugs were legal, what would the best one be?
