But in all seriousness it would be lovely to have a really solid back up when it comes to the flock. I don't mind trying all that we can, but sometimes (like now) I'm just completely stumped and I need help getting answers. So far this site has helped us with just about everything we've come across so I'm extremely grateful for that.

I got anxious and called to see if blood results were in...so far nothing. The wait continues.

She took a full 60 ml this morning and then ate some eggs with worms.  She's still preening and making a lot more happier noises.  The tube they gave me was much easier to get down and she struggled less.  :weee

Good, that makes me happy she feels better! Sometimes I think vets don't know what to do with chickens. They simply don't know. I think they get a lot of their information from chicken owners. The vet I went to did not know what Valbazen was or even rooster booster wormer. She said Ohhhh I will have to look those up. I think a lot of is is that their hands are tied with chickens because chickens are a food animal. The antibiotics that I got for my chicken, she said they are reported to the state (CA) and there was a 6 week egg withdrawal period. I asked about droncit for tapeworms and she said yes we would give that BUT there is a legal/ethical issue since it's not approved for chickens.

My vet knows what Valbazen is, as she should since she is an avian vet and there have been reports about it causing death in pigeons and doves.

As for the "legal/ethical issues, they just has me sign a waiver saying that I won't ever eat the eggs or meat from from birds that have had certain drugs. Off the record, they say just wait 30 days.

Next time you talk to them, ask about the difference between drugs that are banned in poultry and drugs that are off label. Pretty sure all wormers can be used in poultry when prescribed by a vet, but many drugs, like Baytril and metronidazole, are banned. Many vets won't prescribe those, period.

That's good to know. I wish my vet would have known more about the drugs. I would have been happy to sign a waiver. Thanks Kathy, the vet I originally saw was young, but I could tell she was very serious about reporting to the state. Just curious...why is metronidazole banned in poultry? Lol....I have some of that left over from my cat.
Bay bay- I know what you mean about having anxiety about it! Lol...I feel your pain.
 
Metronidazole and all other drugs in the same class are banned for use in *all* food animals because it ha been shown to cause cancer in rats. Metronidazole is used in people, so not really sure how serious the risk is.

Baytril is only banned in poultry, veal and dairy cattle over 20 months.

Hmmm wow. Well it works well for cats who have diarrhea, lol.
